  • Can microwave/ultrasonic assisted extraction improve the utilization of tea seed?
  • In order to improve the utilization of tea seed, microwave/ultrasonic assisted extraction (MUAE) was firstly applied for the extraction of tea seed oil (TSO). The factors with significant effects on oil yield were screened by Plackett-Burman design and then optimized by Box-Behnken design.
  • Is Muae an efficient method for extracting TSO from tea seed?
  • Moreover, SEM results illustrated that the structure destruction of tea seed brought about by combining microwave and ultrasonic was the primary driving force for fast extraction. Therefore, MUAE was an efficient method for extracting TSO. 1. Introduction
  • Can auxiliary extraction methods improve the yield of tea saponins?
  • Scholars have been optimizing extraction conditions based on traditional methods to improve yield over time. The emergence of new auxiliary extraction methods, biotechnological approaches, and radiation-assisted extraction methods has notably reduced extraction time and elevated the purity of tea saponins (Shi, 2019; Zhao & Wu, 2020).
  • How many tons of tea seed oil are produced in 2025?
  • By 2025, it is projected to surpass 14 million hectares, with tea seed oil (TSO) output reaching 2 million tons (Zhou et al., 2024). However, for every metric ton of TSO extracted, nearly 10 tons of by-products such as fruit shell and tea seed meal (TSM) are produced (Chen, Hu, Tu, Wu, & Guan, 2021) (Fig. 1 a).
  • Can tea saponins be used as a by-product of oil extraction?
  • In the future, in-depth research on the development and utilization of tea saponins in TSM will undoubtedly provide a solid scientific basis for addressing the issue of overproduction of TSM as a by-product of oil extraction. It offers valuable references for the sustainable development of resources of C. oleifera Abel. 6. Conclusion and prospects
  • How are tea saponins extracted?
  • The research on the extraction of tea saponins has a long history. At present, the traditional extraction methods of tea saponins primarily include water extraction and organic solvent extraction. These two methods capitalize on good solubility of tea saponins in hot water or alcohols.
